New Garage Door Opener Installation for Homes Across Orange County

Most people call about garage door opener installation for one of three reasons: the old unit finally quit, the noise has become intolerable, or the opener is old enough that it has no safety sensors at all. All three are worth doing properly, and all three are usually a single-visit job.

An opener is a deceptively simple machine. It does not lift your door — the springs do that. The motor only guides a balanced door up and down and holds it closed. That distinction decides almost everything about an installation: the right drive type, the right horsepower, and whether the door itself needs attention first. Putting a brand-new opener on a door with tired springs is how a two-year-old motor ends up burnt out.

So we start with the door. We check balance, spring condition, rollers and track before we quote an opener, and we tell you plainly if the door needs work first. Then we recommend a drive type based on where the garage sits in your house, install it, program everything, and test the safety reverse with you watching.

Replacing the door as well? See garage door installation. If your current unit may be repairable, start with garage door opener repair instead.

🏠︎
Attached Garages

A garage under or beside a bedroom is the clearest case for a belt drive opener install. The rubber belt removes the metal rattle that travels through the framing — the difference people notice most after an upgrade.

𖠿
Condos & Low Headroom

Tight ceilings, storage racks and cathedral framing rule out a standard rail. A wall-mount jackshaft opener bolts beside the torsion bar and leaves the ceiling completely clear.

⚲
Rentals & HOA Communities

Landlords and boards want durability and shared access over app features. A chain drive opener install with keypad entry is usually the right call. See HOA & property services.

When Is It Time for a New Garage Door Opener?

Not every fault means replacement — but these six point strongly toward a new opener rather than another repair bill.

No Photo-Eye Sensors

If there are no small sensors mounted near the floor on each side of the opening, the opener predates 1993 and the federal safety standard. That is a replace-now situation, particularly in a house with children or pets.

Replace It →

Grinding or Straining Motor

A motor that runs while the door barely moves usually means a stripped drive gear — or a spring problem the opener is fighting. We test the door's balance first so you don't buy an opener you didn't need.

Diagnose the Cause →

It Wakes the House

An old chain drive over a bedroom is the most common reason people upgrade. A belt drive is dramatically quieter, and pairing it with nylon rollers removes most of what's left.

Go Quieter →

Remotes Keep Failing

Openers made before the late 1990s use fixed codes that are both insecure and hard to source remotes for. Modern rolling-code units change the code every use and pair with any number of remotes and keypads.

Upgrade Security →

No Backup in an Outage

Without a battery backup, a power cut means pulling the release cord and lifting a heavy door by hand. Every opener we install includes backup power — California has required it since 2019.

Add Battery Backup →

Repairs Are Adding Up

A logic board here, a gear kit there, on a unit past fifteen years. Once repairs approach half the installed cost of a new opener, replacement is the better value — and we'll say so.

Compare the Numbers →

Check This Before You Buy Any Opener

With the door closed, pull the red release cord, lift the door by hand to about waist height, and let go. A balanced door stays roughly where you left it. If it drops or rises on its own, the springs are worn — and a new opener will spend its whole life compensating for that. It's a short, inexpensive fix to do at the same time, and it's the single biggest factor in how long your new opener lasts. See garage door spring repair .

Garage Door Openers We Install & Set Up

Every garage opener installation service below includes mounting, wiring, safety sensors, full programming and removal of the old unit.

Belt Drive Openers

A steel-reinforced rubber belt instead of a chain. The quietest drive we install and our default recommendation for any garage sharing a wall or ceiling with living space.

Belt vs Chain →

Chain Drive Openers

The workhorse. More tolerant of heavy and oversized doors, cheaper to install and replace, and the sensible choice for a detached garage or a rental where noise is not an issue.

Get a Quote →

Wall-Mount Jackshaft

Mounts beside the torsion bar rather than on the ceiling. The answer for low headroom, cathedral ceilings, overhead storage racks or a garage you want to keep visually clear.

Check My Headroom →

Screw Drive Openers

A threaded steel rod drive with few moving parts. Strong and low-maintenance in a stable climate, which Orange County is — a fair middle ground on price and noise.

Get a Quote →

Smart & Wi-Fi Openers

App control, open and close alerts, and one-time guest access for deliveries. We connect it to your home network and test it on your phone before we leave — not after.

Add Smart Control →

Battery Backup

Included on every new opener we install, as California law requires. The door keeps working through an outage — which matters during fire-season power shutoffs.

How Backup Works →

Keypads & Remotes

Exterior keypad, visor remotes for every car, and in-car HomeLink pairing. All programmed and handed over working — no manual left on the workbench for you to decipher.

Keypad Security Tips →

Safety Sensors & Testing

New photo-eyes, correctly aligned, plus travel and force limits set to spec. We finish by testing the auto-reverse in front of you, because that is the feature that actually protects people.

Sensor Issues →

Opener Dead This Morning?
Often Replaced the Same Day

A failed opener usually means a car stuck inside or a door that has to be worked by hand. We stock the common LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie units on the truck rather than ordering them in, so a straightforward replacement is frequently done the same day you call — and the emergency line is answered around the clock either way.

Why Homeowners Choose Us

Garage Door Openers Sized, Installed & Set Up the Right Way

We do more than bolt an opener to the ceiling. We check the door first, recommend the right unit for the actual setup, quote the complete job, and leave every control programmed and ready to use.

Sized to Your Door, Not Sold to You

Horsepower, drive type and rail length come from the door in front of us: its weight, its width, its headroom and where the garage sits relative to the bedrooms. We'll recommend the cheaper unit when the cheaper unit is right.

Honest Recommendation

One Price, Opener and Labor

You get a single written number covering the opener, the installation, the sensors, the haul-away and the programming. No separate mounting charge, no disposal fee added at the end. The quote is the invoice.

Zero Hidden Fees

The Door Checked First

Springs, cables, rollers and balance are inspected before we quote an opener. An opener bolted onto an unbalanced door burns out early, so we'd rather tell you about a worn spring now than replace a motor in two years.

Balance Test Included

Set Up Completely Before We Go

Every remote, the keypad, the wall console, HomeLink in the cars and the phone app — all paired and tested. Handing over a working system is part of the job, not an optional extra you figure out later.

Programming Included

Licensed, Bonded & Insured

CSLB #1140522. Openers involve line-voltage wiring, ceiling structure and a safety system that has to work. Every technician is licensed, insured and background-checked, and arrives in a marked vehicle.

What Every Garage Door Opener Installation Includes

Opener prices are easy to compare and installation quotes are not, which is where most of the unpleasant surprises live. Everything below is part of the price we quote — there is no separate line for disposal, sensors or programming at the end of the visit.

It is also worth knowing what a proper installation actually involves. The motor has to be anchored into structure rather than drywall, the rail has to be squared to the door, the photo-eyes have to sit no higher than six inches off the floor, and the force limits have to be set so the door reverses on contact. Skipping any of those is how a cheap install becomes a callback.

Curious about pricing before you book? Our garage door opener cost guide for Santa Ana walks through what moves the number, and belt vs chain openers covers the choice most homeowners are weighing.

1
Old Opener Removed & Hauled Away

Motor, rail and mounting brackets taken down and disposed of. Nothing is left leaning against your garage wall.

2
New Safety Sensors Fitted

Fresh photo-eyes mounted and aligned at the correct height, with the auto-reverse tested before we call it done.

3
Battery Backup, as Required in CA

Every opener we install includes backup power, so the door still opens during an outage or a planned shutoff.

4
Full Programming & Handover

Remotes, keypad, wall console, HomeLink and the smartphone app — paired, tested and demonstrated to you.

5
Door Balance & Lubrication Check

Springs, rollers and hinges checked and lubricated so the new opener is guiding a door that moves freely.

Installing a New Door at the Same Time?

Doing both together saves a second visit and a second labor charge, and lets us spec the opener against the new door's weight from the start. See garage door installation or residential garage door repair.

What Orange County Homeowners Say

Garage Door Opener Installation FAQs

How much does garage door opener installation cost in Santa Ana?

Installed cost depends on the drive type, the horsepower your door needs, and whether the existing wiring and mounting can be reused. A chain drive on an existing bracket is the least expensive option; a wall-mount jackshaft with new wiring is the most. We quote the opener and the labor as one number before we start, so you are not comparing a low equipment price against an unknown install charge.

Belt drive or chain drive — which should I choose?

If the garage shares a wall or ceiling with a bedroom or living space, choose belt drive. The rubber belt removes the metal-on-metal rattle that carries through the house, and that single difference is what most homeowners actually notice after an upgrade. If the garage is detached, or the door is oversized and heavy, a chain drive is the better value — more tolerant of weight and cheaper to install and replace. We compare both in detail in belt vs chain garage door openers.

How long does a new opener installation take?

A straightforward replacement takes about two to three hours, including removing the old unit, mounting the new rail, wiring the wall console and safety sensors, programming remotes and keypads, and setting the travel and force limits. A first-time installation in a garage with no existing opener, or a wall-mount conversion, usually takes longer because power and mounting have to be added.

Can you install an opener I bought myself?

Yes, we install customer-supplied openers. Two things to know first: California requires a battery backup function on openers installed in the state, so a unit without one cannot be installed, and warranty coverage on a customer-supplied opener comes from the manufacturer rather than from us. Our labor warranty still applies to the installation itself. Send us the model number before you buy and we’ll confirm it suits your door.

Do I need a new opener, or can mine be repaired?

Openers under about ten years old with a single failed part — a drive gear, a logic board, a sensor — are usually worth repairing. Replacement makes more sense when the unit predates 1993 and has no photo-eye sensors, when the repair approaches half the cost of a new opener, or when parts are no longer manufactured. We diagnose before recommending, and we’ll tell you when a repair is the sensible answer. See garage door opener repair.

What horsepower opener do I need?

A standard single door is comfortable on 1/2 HP. A double, insulated or solid-wood door should have 3/4 HP or more, and oversized doors are better served by a 1 HP or wall-mount unit. Horsepower isn’t the whole story, though — an opener only guides a properly balanced door. If your springs are worn, a bigger motor simply fails faster.

Does a new opener include battery backup?

Yes. Since July 2019, California law has required automatic garage door openers sold or installed in the state to include a battery backup, so every opener we install has one. It keeps the door working through a power outage, which matters in a county where planned shutoffs are a normal part of fire season.

Do you haul away the old opener and serve my neighborhood?

We remove and dispose of the old unit as part of every installation — it doesn’t get left in your garage. We’re based on E Wilshire Ave in Santa Ana and install openers throughout Santa Ana, Tustin, Orange, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Anaheim and the surrounding communities. See all service areas.
